BARCELONA, SPAIN · A SOLSTICE MOMENT

Inside La Sagrada Família

When light becomes part of the experience.

Colored light streaming through the interior of La Sagrada Família
La Sagrada Família, Barcelona — light, color and wonder.

I expected extraordinary architecture. I wasn't prepared for the light.

Walking inside La Sagrada Família in Barcelona, the first thing that took my breath away was the way the color filled the space. Warm reds, oranges and golds met greens and blues, washing across the columns and stone.

It wasn't simply something to look at. It changed how the whole space felt.

And then I looked up.

The soaring columns, the height, the shapes and the extraordinary details were almost impossible to take in all at once. For a few moments, all I wanted to do was stop and experience it.

I had seen pictures of La Sagrada Família before. But photographs hadn't prepared me for the way the light would fill the space—or how the colors would make it feel.

Some places really do have to be experienced.

A Solstice Moment

That's one of the things I love most about travel: you can read about a place, see it on a screen, and imagine what it will be like. Then you arrive—and discover something you couldn't have anticipated.

For me, inside La Sagrada Família, that something was the light.
