SWITZERLAND · A SOLSTICE MOMENT
The Journey to the Matterhorn
Sometimes getting there is part of the story.

There are places you've seen in photographs so many times that you think you know what to expect. For me, the Matterhorn was one of those places. But actually standing there and seeing it was something entirely different.
The journey mattered, too.
We boarded the cogwheel train in Zermatt and began the climb toward Gornergrat. As the train wound higher into the mountains, the scenery changed around us. Every turn seemed to reveal another incredible view.
And then there it was—the Matterhorn. I had looked forward to seeing it, but that first glimpse still took my breath away. The mountain was even more impressive than I had imagined.

More than a beautiful view
There was another part of our visit that I wasn't expecting.
At Gornergrat, we came upon a memorial area honoring those who had lost their lives attempting to conquer the Matterhorn. After the excitement of the train ride and the incredible beauty of the mountains, this was a much quieter moment.
Seeing the memorials made me stop and think about the people who came to this mountain not simply to admire it, but to challenge themselves against it—and about those who never returned home.

Standing there surrounded by such extraordinary beauty was both moving and humbling. It reminded me that the places we visit often have stories far deeper than the view in front of us.
The Matterhorn was breathtaking. Learning something about the people whose lives became part of its story made the experience even more meaningful.
Sometimes getting there is part of the story. And sometimes the unexpected moments are the ones that stay with us.
